Some volcanic eruptions caused severe cooling, which led to serious disruptions in the food supply. It was an invisible destroyer, that no one could do anything about. There’s an interesting article in the National Post today, talking about how people historically ignored taking action to save lives.

(And no, Pinatubo wasn’t quite as severe.) Like, what the similarities and differences would be with the current coronavirus pandemic.
