It is a cop out to blame a viral infection. If a person seeks knowledge, they will find it. The problem is not viral but political. Western society has abdicated its responsibility to educate its youth effectively. Basing scholarly performance on memory, repetition by rote, on subjects that are “relevant” to the youth, instead of thought provoking subjects that stretch a person’s imagination and force the individual to learn effort-fully.When we demand less from our youth, they respond with the tool we have given them. The Founding Fathers were brilliant scholars and statesmen. The Constitution they drafted played a large part in creating the greatness of America.
But it wasn’t bulletproof. It presumed that the majority of people would be at least moderately rational. I don’t think the Founding Fathers anticipated such widespread stupidity. I don’t think anything could protect against that.

In our political structure, everything comes down to who has the most votes, whether that person is stupid or great. The fact that great candidates can lose to stupid candidates was part of the way our country was designed. If you have a problem with that, either blame the Founding Fathers or pass Amendments to the Constitution.

Some have immediate and horrifying consequences while others may seem benign until it’s too late to do anything about them. Health authorities stumble around, looking for ways to protect the populations, but run into barriers of cost, politics, human and constitutional rights. We don’t know what deadly epidemic to be more afraid of, or whether some unknown ailment is going to do us in. […]
